Hillary Smith has been entertaining New Mexico audiences for over twenty-five years. Classically trained, Hillary chose the path of a career musician at age 19. From 1982 through the early 90's Hill performed with popular Albuquerque based bands: Fat City, Motion Picture, and Strictly Taboo. Good friend and renouned guitarist, Steven Katz collaborated with Hillary to record "Playing With Fire", Strictly Taboo's award winning debut album. "Playing With Fire" was rotated on local and international radio stations and also used on the movie soundtrack of Neptune's Rocking Horse. This unsigned band became the #1 band on Armed Services radio during Desert Storm. Strictly earned ten awards from the New Mexico Industry Coalition, including two "Best Album of the Year" awards. Hillary was nominated for the Governor's Excellence in Arts award and received an Outstanding Patron Award from the Southwest Symphony in 1999. She is a veteran song writer and producer with six albums to her credit.
Typically, Hill is associated with rockin' blues and funk bands but with the continued influence of friends and fellow artists: Doug Lawrence, Steve Figueroa, Diego Arencon, Bert Dalton, Stu MacAskie, Kevin Hays, (to name a few) she performs jazz exclusively in a number of venues."I love the power behind a "Rufus" tune..a thick groove always gets to me and I love the complexities, the subtleties in jazz, the approach is completely different...... I'm very grateful to the versatile, passionate musicians that allow me to attempt both.....they teach me each and everytime we play together."
Hill can also be found on Sundays- directing the Unity JOY Choir of the Unity Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
No matter the venue, no matter the style...Hillary has a reputation for bringing a gutsy performance... always soulful and full of heart.
