The Fence

The Fence takes place on a small dirt road on the United States/Mexico border. When Gina, a hard-working mother and wife, tries to come home to Mexico after a long day's work in the U.S., she is faced with an enormous fence that has magically sprung up between the two countries. During her struggle to return home, the play presents us with a wide and often hilarious array of characters, all of whom are frustrated by this new development. This timely and funny play provides satirical insight into a variety of contemporary issues. The world premiere in Los Angeles in 2006 garnered rave reviews.
Director Michael D. Blum says, "When I first read the play, I felt an instant urgency to produce it as soon as possible. Exploring the issues currently facing everyone who lives and works on either side of the border is as necessary as it is timely...and sometimes, the only way to face the powerful forces seeking to divide people and cultures is to make us all laugh at our troubles." Writer Johanna Siegmann states, "I wasn't looking for The Fence, it found me. Tired of being angry about these issues, and wanting to find a way to laugh about them and show that we are all part of the problem, the solution presented itself, in this production." The Fence was staged in the fall of 2006 at the Underground Theatre in Hollywood. Don't miss the New Mexico Premiere!
